How many American track athletes have held the title of "World Athlete of the Year" awarded by World Athletics?

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, a total of eight American track athletes have held the title of "World Athlete of the Year" awarded by World Athletics (previously known as the International Association of Athletics Federations or IAAF). This prestigious recognition is bestowed upon athletes who have demonstrated exceptional performances and achievements in the world of track and field.

The first American track athlete to be named "World Athlete of the Year" was Carl Lewis. He received the honor in 1988, in recognition of his dominant performances at the Seoul Olympics, where he won four gold medals in the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump, and 4x100-meter relay events.
